HARRIET SMITH Harriet is currently studying Music at the University of Birmingham. She is a Grade 8 vocalist and Grade 8 Flautist, both talents which she used to great effect during her time with Hobson's Voice. She can be heard singing solo in 'God's Country' on our 'Town & Gown' CD.
ALEXANDER WOOLF [[ First, here is the original entry, and photo! of 2009]]..Apart from playing piano, violin and saxophone, Alexander is studying composition at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is an Aldeburgh Young Musician, meeting all genres of music on courses at Snape Maltings. Alexander is an all-round person, very patient with the older member’s of Hobson’s Voice. [[And here, three years later, is Alex's updated suumary]] Alex Woolf is a 17 year old pianist and composer. He has won several composition competitions this year, including BBC Young Composer 2012 and National Centre for Early Music Young Composer, both pieces being broadcast on BBC Radio 3. His winning fanfare in a Royal Opera House competition was recorded by the ROH orchestra under Sir Antonio Pappano and is played regularly as an alternative interval bell during the 2012/13 season. His music has been played throughout the UK and in Holland and most recently America, by the US Air Force! He has been an Aldeburgh Young Musician since he was 13 and this year will be principal composer with the National Youth Orchestra. Alex loves playing and accompanying, and has also been MD for several shows, including Rent and West Side Story.
SIMON CHARLESWORTH Simon was born in the first half of the twentieth century and joined his first choir at junior school. For the last thirty something years he has been singing unaccompanied folk songs and sea shanties. Hobson’s Voice was his first foray into folk singing as a group activity. NICK CHARLESWORTH Nick was born in 1992. By the age of fifteen he was playing in a baroque ensemble, a gypsy swing jazz band, three choirs, a folk group and a rock band. A multi instrumentalist, polymath and generally nice bloke and inspiration for a mandolin ensemble at Swavesey Village College.
IAN NYE Ian is, among other things, an all-round musician, a community musician, music therapist, composer, arranger, teacher…..He would like to thank John for introducing him to the world of folk music and more importantly, to music embedded in the local culture.
